Navigating perimenopause

Tips for Women Navigating Perimenopause

Perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause, when hormone levels fluctuate and symptoms can begin to affect daily life. Every woman's experience is different, but there are practical strategies that can help improve wellbeing and manage symptoms.

1. Prioritize Quality Sleep

Sleep disturbances are common during perimenopause and may be linked to night sweats, hot flushes, and mood changes. Maintaining a regular sleep schedule, keeping your bedroom cool, and limiting caffeine and alcohol later in the day may help improve sleep quality.

2. Stay Physically Active

Regular exercise can support bone health, help maintain a healthy weight, improve mood, and reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Weight-bearing activities such as walking, jogging, dancing, or strength training are particularly beneficial.

3. Focus on a Balanced Diet

Eating a healthy, balanced diet and including calcium-rich foods can help support overall health and bone strength during the menopausal transition. Examples include dairy products, leafy green vegetables, and fortified foods.

4. Manage Stress and Support Mental Wellbeing

Hormonal changes can contribute to anxiety, low mood, irritability, and mood swings. Relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, tai chi, and mindfulness may help reduce stress. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) may also help with anxiety, low mood, sleep difficulties, and hot flushes.

5. Know Your Common Symptoms

Perimenopause can cause a range of symptoms, including:

  • Irregular periods
  • Hot flushes and night sweats
  • Sleep problems
  • Brain fog and memory difficulties
  • Mood changes
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Weight gain
  • Urinary symptoms or recurrent UTIs

Understanding that these symptoms may be related to perimenopause can help women seek appropriate support and treatment.

6. Seek Support and Talk Openly

Connecting with friends, family, colleagues, or support groups can make the transition feel less isolating. Discussing symptoms with a healthcare professional can also help identify treatment options that fit individual needs.

7. Consider Treatment Options

For women whose symptoms significantly affect quality of life, healthcare providers may recommend treatments such as hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or other non-hormonal options. Treatment decisions should be made in consultation with a qualified healthcare professional based on individual health history and preferences.

8. Don't Ignore Vaginal or Urinary Symptoms

Vaginal dryness, discomfort during sex, and urinary symptoms are common during perimenopause. Over-the-counter lubricants and moisturizers may help, and additional treatments are available through healthcare providers if symptoms persist.
